Yarn and Paper

Since I have spend so much time working and hanging out with one of my best friends who’s working for the same whale watching company this year (she just arrived last week) I didn’t actually get around to a lot in terms of being creative. Though I did start a little art journal type thing but I’m not sure if I want to share those things. But it’s my friends birthday next week so I decided to make her a scarf as a birthday gift (there will also be a humpback painting if I’ll get it done in time). It still can be quite cold on the boat so I hope it will be a good gift and she’ll be able to use it. Iย made a similar scarf last year for myself while I was here but found some higher quality yarn now. It’s not completely done, I still have to sew in all the yarn beginning and end pieces but I’ quite pleased with the result.

In terms of mail not much happened since my last mail related post. I’ve only written one more letter, which should reach it’s destination soon. I’m super pleased though that I managed to match the stamp and envelope to have the same theme. It doesn’t often work out like that but when it does I am always really happy. It’s not exactly the same lighthouse but they do look quite similar in my opinion ๐Ÿ™‚

Thankfully I do know now that my new address works and I receive mail as my mum’s test postcard arrived a couple of days ago. She always sends a card to test whether mail will arrive and surprisingly this card arrived even though there was a small mistake in the street name. But that’s Iceland I guess, there are not so many streets in Akureyri and really not that many buildings that have a ninth floor ๐Ÿ˜€ She send me a really cute reading teddy bear card that’s already up on my wall.

Whales and Birds

I have been working a lot this last week and whales is really almost all that’s been on my mind. We had some of the best tours this season over the weekend and thankfully I had my camera with me on all of them. So yes I will start with some more humpback whale fotos but I promise other things will come. Over the last few days we were so lucky and saw a lot of breaching whales. It all started sunday morning with one whale that jumped about 8-10 times right in front of us and then just more and more cool stuff happened (groups of up to 3 together, feeding right in the harbour, new whales showing up and tailslapping/lobtailing/flipper slapping all from on whale). On one day last week we also saw a few white-beaked dolphins in the fjord. That was the first and so far only occasion that i’ve ever seen them here in Iceland (or anywhere really) and very exciting.

I have also started to try to learn more about some of the different bird species and for that tried to get photos of the ones we see in the fjord as well. Now I don’t know about all of you but taking photos of birds in flight is really hard. Whales are so much easier. But these are the few that I’ve managed so far:

Welcome back whales

I am so so happy that there are already a few whales in the fjord. Last year I arrived about three weeks later and it was a bit complicated at the beginning to find the whales. But now we have already seen 5 different humpback whales and one a couple of days even two minke whales. Most of the tours have been super relaxed and nice. Last weekend one of the humpbacks was almost in the harbour, I couldn’t even finish my intro and there it was . Really cool but also a bit annoying when you have 2 1/2 to 3 hours to fill ๐Ÿ˜€ Anyways here are a few of the photos I’ve taken so far when I was working.

On two days we also saw some tail slapping, which is always nice and interesting to see.

Although I do not know a lot about seabirds, I am super happy that right now there are still quite a few gannets in the area. They are probably my favourite sea bird, I don’t know a lot about them but they are just so elegant looking. As you can also see there is still quite a bit of snow on the mountain tops, though it is possible to see differences every few days as the snow melts.

First send mail from Iceland 2016

I’m pretty sure that last year I had a post with the same title but as you might have noticed when it comes to titles I am not the most creative person there is. I’ve never been, even in school I always had a hard time coming up with interesting titles and headings for things. So I hope you forgive for having the same twice, so that there is no confusion though there is the 2016 ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyways I had four letters with me that I didn’t manage to reply to before I left so that’s what I’ve been doing on my days off so far. All of these have been written now and the last two will be on their way to the post office tomorrow.

These two went out last week already, one on the way to Germany and the other on the way to USA. There’s not much to see as it was pre-post office trip ๐Ÿ˜‰

The other two were written yesterday and today and will both be going to Europe, one to the UK and the other one to Ireland. I’m not too fond of these stamps too be honest. Hopefully next time I go the postoffice they will have some nicer ones and there won’t be as many people waiting so that I can ask for specific ones. I’m really hoping that they will have the Europa 2016 stamps as I do like the design and the message for this year.ย IMG_20160512_163542

DIY Disney shoes

So this is something I’ve been doing in March/April this year. As it so often happens I got inspired by seeing something somewhere on the internet and thought ‘hey, I should be able to make that’… I can’t remember where I saw the photo, unlike most of the crafty population of this world I don’t use pinterest and that makes it a bit hard sometimes to keep track of where things I saw came from.

But I saw these hand painted Disney shoes and since I love Disney movies (I’ll forever be a kid in my heart who loves watching them), I wanted to try making some my self. If you’ve followed my blog for a while you know I love to paint so it wasn’t that weird of a thought. Luckily I found some plain white shoes at the store I was working for and got them super cheap. My thinking was that if i mess it up at least I wouldn’t have spend too much on the attempt. The harder thing was deciding on which Disney movie to paint. A lot of my favourites have humans as main characters and since faces and hands ย aren’t my strong points I finally decided on making a pair of Tarzan shoes for my self. Halfway through that my sister saw them and wanted some herself. She decided on her favourite Disney movie: Nemo.

As you can see of course I drew everyting on in pencil first before starting with the painting. Though it wasn’t really possible to erase the pencil it did help making sure that I had the placing of the characters right. I’m really happy with how they turned out. Maybe I’ll make some more in the future, there’s still so many fantastic Disney movies like ‘The Lion King’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Any way all you need is white shoes, acrylic paint and a fixating spray so that the colour stays on. I’ve worn mine a few times and so far nothing happened to them (even in rain).

Back in Iceland

As I mentioned in the last post I’m now back in Iceland. A day late but I made it here some time friday night. My flight was supposed to be on Thursday night but what do you know about three hours before my flight was supposed to leave the people at the airport in Keflavik decided to strike. Of course I was already at the airport when I was told about it and even though it wasn’t complicated to go back home (well my dad had to come back to the airport after arriving home. He had just dropped me off and of course his phone was out of batterie…), it was a bit annoying. The whole day friday I spend in a ‘how am I supposed to spend my time now’ state. I honestly had done everything that I wanted to finish before going to Iceland, packed stuff away so it wouldn’t accumulate too much dust etc.

Anyway, yesterday I spend the day mostly on the bus from Reykjavik to Akureyri. Iceland is still as beautiful as it was last year and the icelandic language is still as confusing. I’m really not sure how much I’ll actually be able to learn but I’m gonna try my best.

I took a few photos with my phone, my camera was still packed in the depth of my backpack and there was no way to reach it without creating complete chaos. Coming north it got prograssively colder and there is definitely still a good amount of Snow on the mountains. Thankfully here in Akureyri it isn’t as cold as I expected and today was even very sunny. Can’t wait to start working again (hopefully tomorrow).
